Damage to a power cable on Burnham-On-Sea’s famous beach lighthouse has not caused any interruption to its power supply, the town’s Harbour Master confirmed on Monday (September 11th).
His comments came after the main power cable that provides electricity to the building’s vital navigational light was damaged.
A large gash appeared in the cable running up one of the building’s nine legs, as pictured above.
Harbour Master Peter Lee said on Monday it was unclear whether the damage had been inflicted by vandals or just debris during the high tides.
He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The power cable runs along the timber legs and powers the equipment inside. It’s encased with rubber to insulate it and it’s this which has been damaged.”
“Fortunately, the power supply has not been affected and there’s no risk to the light itself. Sedgemoor’s Facilities Department are due to repair it very shortly – we clearly do need to watch it.”
He added: “It’s unclear whether vandals or just the high tides are to blame. I have asked Burnham’s lifeguards to keep an eye on the building as a precaution.”
