Police issue appeal after vandals leave trail of damage in East Huntspill

-

Vandals left a trail of damage after going on a late night rampage following an outdoor music event near Burnham-On-Sea at the weekend.

Shocked organisers of East Huntspill’s Music On The Green event, held on Saturday, called in police after gazebos and tents were ripped up, a car was badly damaged, tables and chairs were broken, and litter bins and signs were damaged.

Liz Birt, who is a member of the organising committee, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It was a sickening sight to find it like this on Sunday morning after a super event the night before.”

“A lot of hard work goes into putting on this free music event each year and, after all that effort to bring our community together, we were devastated that someone would do something like this.”

She said: “Four gazebos were ripped to pieces and a car parked in the field next to the village hall was completely trashed.”

“Its roof was badly dented by people stamping on it, the wing mirrors were ripped off and the petrol cap was pulled off so that a liquid could be poured into the petrol tank.”

She added: “Incredibly, the police wouldn’t come out to us initially – they just wanted to give us a crime reference number by phone. It was only after further pressure that they came to visit us and were shocked to see it.”

East Huntspill parish councillor Rob Prowton added: “It was blatant vandalism and the organisers are understandably heart-broken that this happened. The area was left tidy the night before, so it must have occurred in the early hours of the morning, although nobody seems to have heard anything.”

Police spokesman Martin Dunscombe confirmed: “We are investigating the criminal damage that occurred at the village hall in East Huntspill between midnight and 7.45am on Sunday July 28th. Anyone with information should call police on 101.”
