Stormy weather predicted for Burnham-On-Sea during October high tides

-

Long-range forecasts of gusty winds and stormy conditions for Burnham-On-Sea during early October are being closely watched by Environment Agency bosses as they plan for another set of record high tides.

The forecasts for the weekend of October 7-9, when the high tides are due in Burnham, suggest we could see winds of up to 35mph.

Environment Agency spokesman Paul Gainey told Burnham-On-Sea.com that the forecasts are being closely watched, but said residents should not be too worried about the potential for flooding.

“We have to be careful with long-range forecasts, which can be unreliable. For flooding to occur, we would need to see tidal surges and bad weather occurring at the same time,” he said.

“At the moment, we are fairly confident that there will be no serious problems in Burnham or along the Bristol Channel coast, but we will know more next week.”

He added: “We are monitoring the situation closely and planning as far ahead as possible by making sure flood defence teams are in place and other precautions are ready.”

The comments came after the first round of exceptionally high tides during early of September passed without problems due to calm weather. Residents have their fingers crossed for similar conditions in October.
