Six inches of snowfall blankets Burnham-On-Sea

-

Almost six inches of snow fell on Burnham-On-sea overnight into Saturday (December 18th) and residents were warned to expect more in the hours to come.

These were the wintry scenes across the Burnham area, which have created treacherous driving conditions – see live webcam here.

A jacknifed lorry blocked two lanes of the M5 near Burnham’s junction 22 early on Saturday and, separately, a car left the southbound carriageway on Friday near Sedgemoor Services – as reported here. A further accident on Burnham Road on Friday night left one vehicle badly dented.

The Met Office is predicting further heavy snowfalls on Monday morning.

“The public are advised to take extra care and refer to the Highways Agency for further advice regarding traffic disruption on motorways and trunk roads.”

Burnham’s Mayor and Mayoress enjoyed a stroll along the town’s seafront on Saturday (pictured top) as they attended a fundraising Christmas grotto at BARB.

Meanwhile, residents in the Burnham area have been encouraged by Somerset County Council to check on frail or elderly neighbours during the cold snap.

Miriam Maddison, Community Director at Somerset County Council, said: “Neighbours and families can help by checking that vulnerable people are warm with plenty of food supplies to see them through until weather conditions improve. Offer to help with turning their heating on and check if they have supplementary heaters and if they are able to operate them safely.”

Most sports matches in Burnham this weekend have been postponed. Also, Burnham Fire Brigade has cancelled a promotional car safety event due to take place at several Burnham supermarkets during Sunday.
