People with disabilities are to be invited to enter this year’s Highbridge and Burnham Carnival as a new class is introduced by organisers.
The popular winter procession comes to the towns every November, wowing crowds with dozens of impressive floats.
And a brand new class is to be introduced for the first time this year that will be open to single entries, pairs or groups of people (up to 20) who are registered disabled. A new trophy will also be created for the class.
All the carnivals affiliated to the Somerset County Guy Fawkes Carnivals Association (SCGFCA) are introducing the new class to build on the success of the 2012 Paralympic Games and open up the carnivals to new participants.
Malcolm Cattle, SCGFCA president, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “As our carnivals increase in popularity and become better known across the UK, it is imperative we ensure everybody in our local communities have the same opportunities to take part in our Guy Fawkes celebrations.”
The new class for entries with disabilities has been introduced at all seven carnivals – Highbridge and Burnham, Bridgwater, Weston, North Petherton, Shepton Mallet, Wells and Glastonbury.
“We take our diversity and inclusion principles extremely seriously and it will help us to ensure the continued success of our wonderful carnivals for many more years to come,” added Malcolm.
The closing dates for entrants is Sunday 1st September and entry forms for the Burnham parade can be obtained from the secretary Jan Paul on 01278 784607. This year’s carnival takes place on Monday November 4th.
