New figures announced this week reveal the rate at which new homes were built in Sedgemoor during the last year has continued to exceed national trends.
Data published by Sedgemoor District Council shows 618 new homes were completed, which is only 6% below the pre-recession peak recorded in 2007/2008 before the economic downturn hit the construction industry nationwide.
The news of home building continuing strongly in the district comes on the back of recent government reports showing that nationally house building rates are still around 37% below peak.
“The provision of affordable housing has once again contributed hugely to the overall housing tally, with nearly half of all the new homes built last year falling into this category,” council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“Amidst recent reports of housing becoming increasingly unaffordable for average families, this should be welcome news for both prospective housing association tenants and first time buyers who can’t stretch financially to buying a home on the open market.”
Housing development in Sedgemoor is set to continue strongly in coming years, as around 3,300 more new homes are already in the pipeline to meet future demand.
This includes the development of a further 550 homes at Brue Farm in Highbridge and 1,700 homes in North East Bridgwater, where over 300 homes have already been built.
