Work is set to get underway on building a long-awaited new £60,000 play park in Highbridge.
Sedgemoor District Council’s Clean Surroundings Team has this week been removing the old 20-year old playing equipment at Southwell Gardens ahead of the construction work beginning.
Sedgemoor commissioned building firm Halcrow to prepare a design for the new children’s play area, which is located next to the playing fields behind the town’s St John Ambulance HQ.
Sedgemoor District Council’s parks officer, Harley Cook, told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “Having gained planning consent for the facilities, construction is set to begin in September and the new play park is scheduled to be open before the end of the year.”
The new play area is being funded by property developers’ mandatory community contributions to offset the impact of local housing development.
The modern play equipment will be suitable for children aged 2-14 and will have a seaside adventure theme. It will include balancing, swinging, climbing, sliding, spinning and other activities.
Highbridge War Memorial Trust Hall, which owns the land, has welcomed the work. “The current equipment has been in place for over 20 years and definitely needs replacing, so we are very pleased to see this scheme,” the group’s Pam Lyes told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
