A disabled man is celebrating his new job at an animal rescue centre near Burnham-On-Sea thanks to the support of a social enterprise group.
Nick Wynn, 50, from Burnham is employed as a Maintenance and Gardener Operative at Secret World in East Huntspill.
Nick, who has learning disabilities, has been volunteering at Secret World since 2004 and it is thanks to Pluss, which inspires people of all abilities to achieve work and a career, that Nick is now employed 21 hours per week after receiving support from the Work Choice programme.
He said: “Pluss have supported me enormously and a job coach has been supporting me regularly. I think it is amazing what they do. My goal is to stay working here at Secret World.”
Support from Pluss included job coaching provided by job coaches Louise Blewitt and Kate Parfoot to learn aspects of his new role and also funding from Pluss, which initially paid Nick’s wages for 6 months. Nick has done so well that he is even showing new volunteers the ropes.
His current job coach, Kate Parfoot, said: “He has settled down and got on really well. I would say keep going, keep learning and Nick is a really good role model to the volunteers. Keep up the good work.”
Pluss is a social enterprise that supports thousands of people with disabilities and other disadvantages into employment each year. We do this through a range of specialist, local employment services and through direct employment within our own commercial enterprises.
