A Highbridge student has taken to the airwaves and become the youngest radio breakfast show presenter in Somerset.
Jake Hodge volunteers at Access FM, based at Bridgwater YMCA, for two hours each weekday morning.
Both he and Sian Graham are studying a Foundation Degree in Media Practice at Bridgwater College and present on the College’s Media Academy3’s radio station to approximately 600 online listeners a week.
The duo broadcast weather and traffic reports, the ‘low down’ on Bridgwater, do a daily brainteaser and play music on their breakfast show.
Jake, 19, from Highbridge said: “Since starting my course I have presented on two radio shows, both through the College and Access FM and gained freelance work with the BBC on both feature and short films.”
“The course has helped me in these roles as it provides both theoretical and practical learning. The course could definitely help kick-start a media career.”
Alan Hardcastle, Lecturer at Bridgwater College, added: “The best way to get a job in the media is to actually go out and work in the industry, whether voluntary or paid, and it is not always as hard as it sounds.”
“We have a variety of opportunities that many students use. Access FM is a community based radio station and is a great start to a media career – whether presenting or producing.”
