Burnham-On-Sea’s MP, David Heathcoat-Amory, claimed £111,795 in expenses during the last financial year according to official figures released this week.
But while the figures show a two per cent increase compared to last year, Mr Heathcoat-Amory says his overall expenditure remains lower than many other MPs in the south west.
The expenses, which are paid on top of MPs’ salaries, are spent on items such as staff wages, travel, stationery, postage and IT.
Mr Heathcoat-Amory spent £21,374 on his Additional Costs Allowance – which covers expenses incurred when staying away for the purpose of performing parliamentary duties.
Also, £19,660 was claimed on Incidental Expenses, covering office accommodation, equipment and supplies. He also spent £62,709 on staff, £5,880 on travel, £414 on staff travel, £460 on stationery, £382 on postage and £916 on computer equipment.
Commenting on the figures, Mr Heathcoat-Amory said: “I and my hardworking staff do our best to provide an excellent service for my constituents, but I am also conscious of the need to protect the taxpayer.”
“I am therefore pleased that my total expenses are among the lowest of any MP in the south west and lower than any Liberal Democrat or Labour MP.”
