Thousands of Burnham motorists breaking speed limit, finds study

-

Thousands of motorists are exceeding the 30mph speed limit along a busy residential road in Burnham-On-Sea, a new study has found.

Official data gathered in Berrow Road from Somerset County Council’s speed monitoring system during June and July reveals that thousands of drivers are ignoring the speed limit.

Of 37,675 vehicles driven past the device during June, 23,313 were travelling slower than the 30mph limit. However, 13,828 vehicles were driven at between 30-40mph, while 493 travelled at 40-50mph, and 41 vehicles travelled over 50mph.

The figures have been debated at Burnham and Highbridge Town Council’s latest meeting. Cllr Tom Nicholls told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s disappointing that some drivers are ignoring the limit, putting other people’s safety at risk, but on the whole these are a good set of results.”

“It’s encouraging to see the average speed in Berrow Road is 28mph and the bulk of motorists are travelling under or on the speed limit.”

The figures, gathered by Somerset County Council for the Town Council, will be passed to Burnham Police who are likely to step up their own speed checks in response.

Town councilors say they continue to have concerns about traffic speeds in nearby Stoddens Road. A speed-monitoring device is also to be installed there shortly to gather information over the coming months.
