70 racers ready to roar into action at this weekend’s Brean Rally

The smell of burning rubber and the sound of screeching tyres will be in the air at Brean this weekend when dozens of teams take part in the village’s annual car rally.

Brean Leisure Park is hosting the 15th annual K&R Mitsubishi Stages Rally on Saturday and Sunday (January 22nd and 23rd).

With a present entry of more than 70 competitors gathered from all parts of the South West and beyond, the organisers are expecting some close competition throughout the classes.

Top-seeded drivers already entered are Peter Lloyd, the winner of the 2010 race in his Subaru Impreza S12 WRC, Dave Kynaston in his Audi A3 Quatro, Steve Furzeland in his Subaru Impreza WRC and Karl Broad in his MG Metro 6R4. Also featuring in the line-up is a Ford RS200, Mitsubishi Evo’s and an Aston Martin Rally GT.

Winner for the past two years Peter Lloyd will be out to become the first driver to make it ‘three in a row’. Peter stopped Kynaston’s run in 2009 and is running directly behind him this year will be out to thwart Lloyd’s attempt.

Spectators are welcome over both days and gates open at the park from 8am. Admission is by a £20 car parking charge, which includes a souvenir programme and a free draw for a 3 or 4 day break at the holiday park during the summer months. The park is opening both its indoor and outdoor catering facilities, as well as a seated covered grandstand for the weekend. Racing starts at 10am.

The rally is split into sections, leg one is on Saturday with six special stages and leg two is on Sunday with a further six special stages.

“An added extra to this year’s rally is a Trophy Rally section which is made up from those competitors who were unfortunate not to have completed the Saturday stages, through mechanical failures. Providing they can get their car fit overnight then they can come back into the rally on Sunday,” organiser Rod McKenna told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“This is the fifteenth year for this popular rally and it has attracted what is probably the highest standard of entry in its history, with no less than five World Rally Cars among the top entries.”

The rally, promoted by Club Rallysport West, will form the opening round of the Association of South Western Motor Clubs and the Cotswold Motor Sport Group.

The rally is this year supporting Help for Heroes and local charity Highbridge Dreamscheme.
