Glastonbury festival organiser Michael Eavis is among several well-known names that are set to appear in a new ‘Save Our Libraries’ campaign film aimed at halting the proposed closures of libraries such as Highbridge’s.
MP Tessa Munt, House of Lords member Julian Fellowes, and Anne Chisholm, Chair of the Royal Society of Literature, will also take part in the six-minute film which aims to pile pressure on Somerset County Council to re-think its proposals to withdraw funding for 20 libraries, including the one in Highbridge.
In the film, they will be offering their comments on the importance of libraries, books and education.
Their comments will appear alongside members of the public who have been invited to film shoots taking place in Glastonbury and Shepton Mallet this week.
The film will “challenge the extent and the permanence of the cuts to library services and address the likely impact to communities both now and in the future,” says film maker Ken Kutsch.
Somerset County Council has proposed ceasing funding to 20 out of its 34 libraries, prompting campaigners to demand that the government hold a public inquiry into the plans.
Burnham-On-Sea.com reported last month that Highbridge library, pictured above, is on the hit list of libraries which the council wants to wind down as part of a £75m cost-cutting exercise.
