Gardeners in the Burnham-On-Sea area have this week been urged to support the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds’ (RSPB) annual event to record sightings of wild birds.
Sanders Garden World in Brent Knoll is encouraging bird lovers to get involved with the charity’s Big Garden Birdwatch, which will be held this Saturday (January 29th) and Sunday (January 30th).
Peter Burks, General Manager of Sanders Garden World, said: “The Big Garden Birdwatch weekend is designed to help raise awareness of the RSPB and its important conservation work. The charity is inviting people to get involved in the world’s biggest bird survey, which provides it with a vital snapshot of the UK’s bird population.”
“Anyone can join in. We are offering people the chance to pick up free bird spotting forms from the garden centre. These need to be filled in and the results submitted on the RSPB website at www.RSPB.org.uk.”
“Staff from the garden centre will be submitting entries from their own gardens too to support the initiative.”
The annual event, which has been running since 1979, invites people of all ages from all across the UK to spend one hour counting the birds that visit their gardens.
During the weekend, there will also be displays of bird baths, tables, feeders and wild bird food at Sanders Garden World. Staff will be on hand to offer free advice to people looking for ideas on how to encourage birds into their gardens.
Peter added: “January is the best time to see birds because the harsh winter weather brings them into our gardens seeking food and shelter. Birds are essential to a healthy garden as they eat bugs so they need to be encouraged and looked after by gardeners.”
