£54,000 boost for community sports facilities in Burnham and Highbridge

-

Skaters and footballers in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge are celebrating this week after two community sports projects were given a £54,000 boost.

Sedgemoor District Council’s Grants Awards Sub-Committee has approved bids to improve community facilities in the towns.

£20,000 of funding is to be used to improve the skate park facilities at Apex Park in Highbridge, pictured above.

It comes after youngsters from the Burnham Skate Park Improvement Group produced a series of designs and also consulted with park users regarding the proposals to improve the facilities.

Burnham and Highbridge Town Council and the Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group have both backed the plans, which will cost a total of £30,000 to complete.

Separately, £34,128 has been awarded to a project to create a new grass mini football pitch on the former landfill site at Rosewood Green in Worston Lane, Burnham.

The new pitch will be situated on public open space and will be free to use by the local community. It is intended to benefit residents living within one mile radius of the site, estimated to be around 5,000 people.

Sedgemoor’s Parks and Open Spaces Policy Officer Harley Cook said: “The proposed facility will offer local residents the opportunity to improve general fitness and strength, social interaction and ball games skills in an outdoor environment. The Playing Pitch Strategy identifies a need to increase mini football pitches in Sedgemoor.”

The news comes just days after Burnham-On-Sea.com reported here that the first phase of a project to create a new park on the former Rosewood rubbish tip had been completed, as pictured above.
