A local wildlife photographer captured this wonderful scene at Brean this week when a huge flock of several thousand wading birds passed through the area.
Paul Bowyer photographed the flock of approximately 5,000 Dunlins at high tide on Tuesday (January 25th).
“I used dot counting computer software on several photos to come up with the figure of 5,000, but the flock looked to be more like 6-7,000,” he told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
Dunlins are frequently seen during the winter months, feeding in large flocks, before roosting on fields, marshes and on the shore when the tide is high. The birds breed in northern Scandinavia and Russia and arrive in the UK each autumn before heading back to their breeding grounds in the spring.
