Burnham-On-Sea will quite literally be the hottest place in Somerset on Saturday 28th September when the town’s Food & Drink Festival holds its first chilli-eating competition!
The ‘Great Burnham Burn Off’ is a new free-to-enter contest where competitors will be encouraged to go head-to-head to discover who can take the heat.
It will be hosted by The Clifton Chilli Club, who are working with ‘local food hero’ winners The Chillees to find the hottest chillis on the planet.
Festival Director Beverley Milner Simonds said: “If you haven’t seen a chilli-eating competition live before then we really recommend being at the junction of Victoria Street and College Street junction at 3.30pm. Competitors can either sign up now via Facebook or with the organisers on the day.”
Chilli Dave, from the Clifton Chilli Club, added: “We have organised chilli eating competitions all over the UK and Europe. The end of September is the perfect time to hold a contest as this season’s chillies will be at their peak. We are looking forward to bringing the pick of the crop to Burnham-On-Sea and seeing if Somerset can stand the heat!”
The festival offers several opportunities to try something new, with food as varied as Caribbean jerk chicken, deep south style pulled pork, wood-fired pizza and lots of chilli products!
Entry to the festival will be free and venues will open at 9am and include Somerset Skills & Learning, Baptist Church, Princess Theatre and Burnham Methodist Church.
