Sedgemoor District Council has this week pledged to carry out a clean-up of Burnham-On-Sea’s beach after rocks and metal from the town’s former Marine Lake swimming pool re-emerged in the sand over the summer, raising safety concerns.
The safety concerns were first reported here last month, prompting the council to investigate.
Council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “Remains of a wall which formed Marine Lake have been recently uncovered by tides and currents.”
“Sedgemoor will be removing loose stone or stones protruding from the sand at the current beach level.”
“However, there are some solid and partially buried old walls which will remain after the clear up at beach level. It is expected that sand movement will recover these structures.”
While Marine Lake was removed many decades ago, debris from the structure still resurfaces on the beach to the south of the jetty every few years.
Marine Lake opened in 1931 and was used for swimming and boating. It was later closed due to heavy silting and erosion, but some of its foundations were not fully removed, as pictured below.
