Burnham-On-Sea councillors intervene in saga over disputed footpath

-

The long-overdue clean-up of a Burnham-On-Sea footpath was completed on Saturday (December 16th) after two district councillors intervened in a long-running dispute.

Arthur Thorogood and Bob Filmer armed themselves with gardening tools to clear away the overgrown foliage and leaves that are blocking half of the footpath near Priestley Way.

It comes after a long-running dispute between Somerset County Council and a developer over who should maintain the path.

Cllr Thorogood told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The path hasn’t been cleared of overgrown material for around two years and because it’s a popular footway to King Alfred School for many local children, some local residents have been calling for action.”

“We’ve been pressing Somerset County Council to do a clear-up for months, but because of a dispute over who should maintain the path, nothing has been done. It’s a ridiculous situation.”

“Since Bob and I have constituents in the Burnham North and Burnham Without wards who are affected by this, we’ve decided to do the work ourselves.”
