Historic ship’s past goes in focus at Highbridge history talk

-

The SS Great Britain will be the topic of North Sedgemoor Local History Group’s meeting in Highbridge this Wednesday (February 9th).

Janet Brinnand, a trustee of the SS Great Britain Trust, and Commander Philip Unwin RN, a volunteer guide with the Trust, will be the special guests for the talk in the Lecture Theatre of King Alfred School.

“Janet and Philip will give an illustrated talk about the life of Brunel’s SS Great Britain, the world’s first ocean-going iron ship,” the history group’s John Strickland told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“They will cover her place in maritime history and the four phases of her life, from transatlantic liner to floating warehouse in the Falkland Islands, her remarkable salvage, and her return to the Bristol dock from which she was first floated out 127 years earlier.”

The event starts at 7pm and non-members are welcome to attend for just £1.
