Town councillors last night raised fresh objections over new plans to build two blocks of three-storey retirement apartments in the centre of Burnham-On-Sea.
The revised scheme from Abracore Ltd proposes 35 apartments be built on the site of the former Tucker’s Garage in Victoria Street.
But at a meeting last night (Wednesday), councillors on the Planning Applications Committee said that despite several changes, previous objections are still valid.
Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton told the meeting: “There are a few minor changes but our previous objections about the development being out of keeping and having too few parking spaces remain.”
Cllr Phil Harvey added: “To propose building 35 flats here with just 19 parking spaces is just unrealistic.”
A letter from a nearby business, Positive Wealth Creation in Victoria Street, was read to the meeting where further concerns about the scheme were raised.
Sedgemoor District Council rejected proposals for the site in July amid concerns regarding flooding risks, affordable housing, a lack of outdoor sports facilities and a loss of privacy for nearby homeowners. But the developer says its new scheme addresses the comments.
Sedgemoor District Council’s planning department is currently accepting feedback on the scheme – application number 11/13/00097 – until October 4th and its Development Control Committee is then expected to consider the scheme before a final decision is taken on whether to allow the development.
