Major traffic disruption has been predicted on roads around Burnham-On-Sea during this year’s carnival weekend when changes are introduced to where carnival carts can park.
For the first time, Queen’s Drive will be fully shut from the Tesco roundabout right through to the M5 roundabout at Edithmead from 9pm on Saturday November 2nd until 1am on Tuesday November 5th.
The extended road closure is being introduced by carnival organisers following a request from police that the Frank Foley Parkway is no longer used for parking of carnival carts to improve access for emergency vehicles.
Phil New, Carnival Chairman, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We’ve agreed to move the carts away from the Frank Foley Parkway and into the extended section of Queen’s Drive to meet the police’s request. Unfortunately, I do think it will create traffic chaos getting into Burnham – it might be a nightmare.”
The extended closure is expected to cause congestion on alternative roads, especially on the Sunday night when Burnham holds its popular annual seafront fireworks display.
The preferred diversion for all Burnham traffic from the M5 will be along the A38 to Highbridge, turning right at the Asda roundabout onto Burnham Road. The alternative will be to travel through Brent Knoll to the Berrow Triangle.
It will be the first year that the usual diversion around Queen’s Drive via Edithmead Lane will not be open.
In previous years, Queen’s Drive was closed from the Tesco roundabout to Edithmead Lane. The Frank Foley Parkway will this year only be briefly closed from 4pm on carnival night, Monday November 4th.
