Burnham-On-Sea’s University of the Third Age will be celebrating the accomplishments of two of its longest-serving members later this month.
Members of the U3A, based at Burnham’s Community Centre in Berrow Road, will be gathering on Saturday 26th October to mark the efforts of Ken Hindle and Tony Winterburn.
“Members of the U3A are invited to join us for an afternoon of praise for these two gentlemen who have had such an impact on society and the lives of others,” the group’s Sue Meads told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“After some 60 years of perseverance and sheer hard work within the local community, the U3A’s President, Ken Hindle, was recently been honoured with the prestigious British Empire Medal for voluntary services to adult education. Ken has dedicated his adult life by being involved with such projects as youth work, preaching, adult and nursery education, the homeless as well as establishing the Burnham U3A and being Chairman of the Community Centre for nearly ten years.”
“Tony Winterburn was awarded the Arctic Star for his valiant contribution to the war effort. Tony was serving as a Junior Officer in the Merchant Navy and heavily involved with the support of the Russian Red Army during the Arctic Campaign. Convoys carrying valuable war material to the Red Army were under constant attack from the German forces. It is only recently that our present Government recognised this contribution and commissioned the striking of this new campaign medal.”
Tony was presented with a Civic Award in 2007, as we featured here, and Ken’s BEM Medal was announced earlier this year.
