A town councillor in Burnham-On-Sea says a long line of ‘unwelcoming and intimidating’ signs installed along part of the town’s beach this week could deter tourists.
Six of the signs have been introduced on the beach next to the privately owned sand dunes running between The Mount, near Allandale Road, and the low lighthouse.
One nearby resident, who asked not to be named, explained why they have been introduced. “There have been several times over the summer where people were camping in the dunes and holding noisy late-night barbecues and parties without knowing this is private land.”
But town councillor Phil Harvey believes the signs are too visible. He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “They are certainly very noticeable and rather intimidating. They are also very unwelcoming for tourists and beach users who use this popular stretch of beach.”
Sedgemoor District Council spokesman Claire Faun said: “If the signs are on private property and are within certain sizes, we do not need to be consulted.”
