Exclusive: Burnham-On-Sea residents call for CCTV cameras

-

A dented car in the streetAngry residents living along a Burnham-On-Sea road who have been plagued by damage to their vehicles have today called for CCTV cameras to be introduced in a bid to tackle the problem.

Dunstan Road residents say their car windscreens have been smashed, the sides of vehicles dented and wing mirrors ripped off by a combination of vandals and careless drivers who use the narrow road as a short-cut from Oxford Street through to Love Lane.

Talking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, resident Wendy Gill (pictured) said: “Enough is enough. Something needs to be done here to stop this worsening problem. We need CCTV to give police and the local council advanced warnings of problems as they are happening.”

Her comments came after the latest incident – earlier this week – when Mrs Gill’s Peugeot 306 was attacked. “I came out of my house to find muddy footprints over my car’s bonnet and roof, together with the windscreen smashed,” she said. “There were also footprints on the side windows, where the vandals had tried to kick in the glass.”

Town councillor Arthur Thorogood met Wendy Gill and other residents this week“Sadly, this isn’t unusual – my car’s wing mirrors have been knocked off six or seven times now, and several other cars have been scratched with keys.”

Town Councillor Arthur Thorogood, who met Wendy and other residents in the road this week, (pictured) is trying to help them find a solution.

“Several other nearby residents have contacted me to say they have been affected, so it’s not just a few isolated cases. I agree that something needs to change,” he told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“While introducing CCTV cameras wouldn’t completely solve the problem, it would certainly deter vandals from striking here.”

Anoother option being considered by residents is getting bollards introduced at one of the road to block through-traffic and thereby cut down the number of passing motorists.
