Brean’s summer radio station, Coast FM, looks set to go on air for two months this summer – doubling its previous transmission time.
Owner Josh Haywood, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week that the temporary station – which covers Burnham, Berrow and Brean – has applied to radio regulator Ofcom for an eight week licence.
“We should heard back in the next couple of months whether our application to extend the Coast FM licence is successful – we’ve got our fingers crossed,” he said.
“If successful, we’ll be on air during the whole of July and August this year.”
He added that the station had decided against applying for a full-time Private Community Radio Licence which would have seen the station operating the whole year round.
“The station has been financially successful operating for a few weeks in the summer, but to broadcast the whole year round we’d need huge advertising support – and backing from national advertisers which would devalue our local feel.”
The station went on air for the first time in 2005 and was back on air for the month last August. It broadcasts a mix of music from the 1960s to today plus competitions, phone-ins and tourist information.
