Residents welcome rejection of Burnham-On-Sea takeaway plan

-

Concerned residents who are fighting plans for a new Burnham-On-Sea takeaway near their homes have won their battle.

A full planning application was submitted for the new Indian eatery at the former Castle Antiques unit on Victoria Street, as first reported here by Burnham-On-Sea.com.

Residents were concerned as only one nearby resident, Oliver Hulme, who lives above the former shop with his wife and two children, formally received notice of the plans.

Protesters were concerned that the takeaway, which was proposed to open 5pm to 11pm daily including Bank Holidays, would impact on their lives due to noise and traffic issues.

They were delighted this week to be told that the proposals, submitted by Saylem Hossain from Bridgwater, have been turned down by Sedgemoor District Council.

The council said: “The proposal is considered unacceptable and unable to safeguard the occupants of nearby buildings from noise, disturbance and odours associated with the proposed use and would diminish the degree of privacy neighbours could reasonably expect in and around their homes.”

This comes after the applicant tweaked the plans at the eleventh hour.

Resident Mr Hulme said: “We’re relieved this was refused. A takeaway so close to us would have a huge negative impact on our lives. We didn’t want our lives disrupted by the constant smell and noise of cooking, the arrival of customers late at night and seeing the value of our homes drop by a third.”
