Almost 200 historical photos showing life in Burnham-On-Sea during the 1900s will be shown during an illustrated talk in the town this week.
North Sedgemoor Local History Group is holding the event at the Lecture Theatre at King Alfred School this Wednesday (March 9th) at 7pm when June Thomas will present 190 slides of Burnham and Highbridge during the 1900s.
Her talk, ‘Local people at work and play’, will focus on people in the town throughout the 1900s.
“Rather than places of interest, this presentation views the Burnham and Highbridge area from a different angle, taking a look at the people and what they did,” the group’s John Strickland told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“Included are the people who were involved with The Brickworks, The Brewery, The Railway and Jetty, and also local shops. Recreation also plays a large part – The Tennis Courts in the Grove, The Bowling Green, Model Yacht club and Entertainment.”
The talk will start in the Lecture Theatre of King Alfred School at 7pm and visitors are welcome to attend for just £1 each.
Pictured are several of the images that will be displayed, including John Baker outside his Fish and Chip Shop at No 4 Cross Street; the delivery boy for Lawrence’s shop at 31 College Street around 1914; and the paddle-steamer The Waverley at Burnham Jetty with a little boy (Fred King) sitting crying because his father, the pilot, would not let him onboard for a trip
