Work to raise the height of kerbs in Highbridge as part of a bid to stamp out pavement parkers took an interesting twist on Monday (February 12th) when several vehicles became trapped behind deep trenches.
Local resident Jason Adams told Burnham-On-Sea.com several vehicles had been trapped behind a two foot by three foot trench dug by workmen who were installing the new, higher kerbs along Church Street.
“We were not warned that the work was going to be carried out and there was no attempt to contact the owners,” he said. “One poor driver who works nights went to bed and when he got up his car was trapped.”
The latest twist in the long-running parking saga came just days after we reported that town councillors had stepped up their calls for the County Council to halt the problem of vehicles being parked along pavements in Church Street amid fears for the safety of pedestrians.
Liam Gill, Somerset County Council’s Assistant Highways Service Manager for Sedgemoor, said the kerb line in front of the former ‘Normans’ site could be raised but that he was unable to approve the installation of new flower beds and bollards behind the kerbs to block parkers.
Until these are installed, though, some councillors believe the problem will continue.
Meanwhile, some residents are arguing that if better local car parking facilities were provided, they would not need to park on the pavements.
