Walls and seating inside the shelters along Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront are being removed in an attempt to reduce anti-social behaviour and vandalism.
Sedgemoor District Council has this week made major alterations to several shelters on the South Esplanade, as pictured, following discussions with Burnham Police about a series of recent incidents.
Sedgemoor District Council spokeswoman Sam Taylor told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The internal walls have been removed to open-up the shelters and reduce incidences of vandalism and anti-social behaviour.”
“The bench-slats – that were supported by the walls – had previously been removed as they had reached the end of their useful life and could have posed a safety risk if left in situ.”
She added: “Free standing benches will be installed in the shelters. It is hoped that the style of the new benches and the open-plan shelter design will deter vandals and those wishing to take part in anti-social behaviour.”
