Deer killed after being ‘hunted’ from wildlife park near Burnham

-

The owners of a wildlife park near Burnham-On-Sea believe several deer that were killed early on Tuesday (March 15th) had been deliberately hunted out of their enclosure.

A number of the animals at Alstone Wildlife Park, near Highbridge, were pulled free from the muddy banks of the River Brue after being scared out of their enclosure just after midnight.

But several others could not be saved from the river bank before the incoming tide swept them away.

Alstone Wildlife Park’s Helen Duckett says she believes the deer were herded out of their enclosure deliberately.

She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We think several of our red deer were hunted out of their enclosure at around midnight.”

“Some were rescued from the mud, but unfortunately a couple were stuck and were washed away by the tide during the early hours of the morning.”

She appealed for any witnesses who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the Alstone area to get in touch.

“If anyone happened to be taking their dogs for a late walk and saw people tampering with the fencing, we urge them to contact Burnham Police.”
