EU referendum hustings event to be held in Highbridge this Thursday

-

An election hustings event is to be held in Highbridge this Thursday (June 9th) when MP James Heappey will lead a debate on the EU referendum.

Whether you’ve made your mind up or are still completely undecided, local residents are being encouraged to join the debate at Highbridge Community Hall at 7.30pm on Thursday 9th June.

“Accessing decent information to help you make up your mind is challenging. Like so many of you, I am despairing at the silliness of the debate,” said James Heappey, who is yet to say whether he will be voting ‘in’ or ‘out’.

“The scare stories from both sides are seen through by most and only the Westminster bubble seems to be invigorated by the campaigns.”

“I also think the Government was wrong to send out their leaflet only telling one side of the story.”

“We Brits are a suspicious bunch and I’ve met many people who, after reading it, couldn’t help wonder what they weren’t being told.”

No tickets are necessary for Thursday’s debate – just turn up on the night and seating will be on a first come, first served basis. Doors open at 7pm.

The debate will last for 90 minutes. After some short opening speeches, there will be an open section of the debate with pre-submitted questions followed by open questions from the floor in the style of BBC One’s Question Time.

If you’d like to ask one of those opening questions, Burnham-On-Sea.com readers can email their question to james.heappey.mp@parliament.uk. If you’re selected to ask your question, we’ll let you know in advance and a seats will be reserved for you.

If you just want to chip in during the debate, Mr Heappey will be inviting questions and points from the floor once the opening question on each section has been answered.

Arguing to remain will be Ben Bradshaw, who has been MP for Exeter since 1997. The speaker for Vote Leave is still to be confirmed.

Mr Heappey is also holding two further hustings events at Wells Cathedral at 7.30pm on Friday 10th June, and Kings of Wessex School in Cheddar at 7.30pm on Thursday 16th June.
