Burnham-On-Sea artist’s drawing wins postcard competition

-

A Burnham-On-Sea artist’s drawing of Glastonbury Tor surrounded by a flock of starlings has won a competition to design a postcard that best represents Somerset.

Rose Marcia, who attends art courses at Burnham’s Somerset Skills & Learning centre in Princess Street, has been named the winner with this colourful drawing.

Organised by Somerset Skills & Learning, the contest attracted entries from across the county and depicted towns, beaches, countryside and buildings.

Two designs stood out for the judges – one a beautiful stylised view of Eagle Lane in Frome, the other of starlings flying over Glastonbury.

“It was a difficult decision,” lead tutor and one of the judges, Ade Bowen, told Burnham-On-Sea.com. “Both these designs were very good, but in the end the vote went to the one which was thought to sum up Somerset the most, and that had to be the starlings over Glastonbury. It’s a very strong image and one we think anybody who has seen the birds flocking can identify with.”

Rose, who won £50 worth of Somerset Skills & Learning vouchers, said: “I was thrilled when I heard my design had won. I have been to many art courses before but I really do feel I have learnt more through my current course than any others.”

“I went to see the starlings dancing in the sky and it inspired me to draw the picture. For me, Glastonbury Tor and the starlings really do represent Somerset.”

Some of the entries can be viewed online on the virtual learner’s gallery at www.vpa.wetpaint.com/page/Art+Competition. The top six designs will be turned into postcards for visitors to the area to purchase.
