The demolition of Highbridge’s Beechfield School could be delayed by the possible discovery of a colony of bats in the roof of the building.
Wildlife experts have been called in by Somerset County Council this week to investigate whether the animals are nesting in the roof of the former school in Burnham Road, pictured here .
County Council spokeswoman Jan Hookings confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There is evidence that bats may be roosting there following the discovery of droppings in the building.”
“An ecologist is on site this week to establish how many are there. If they are roosting there, we may have to re-house them.”
She said demolition work is scheduled to begin on March 28th but is dependent on the issue being resolved.
The school closed last year, as Burnham-On-Sea.com reported here, when Beechfield and St John’s Schools merged to form Churchfield.
