A crowd of up to 30,000 people lined Burnham-On-Sea’s streets to see the town’s spectacular carnival on Monday night.

A cavalcade of illuminated carts rolled through the town for the 66th annual Highbridge and Burnham Carnival.

The results, listed in full here, saw Ramblers Carnival Club win the award for the best entry in the whole procession for its dazzling cart Swarm Force, pictured below.

The biggest cheers of the night were for Burnham’s Hillview Carnival Club, whose float, Luck Of The Irish, pictured right, proved popular with spectators. The club came second in the juvenile class and was named best local entry and won the Chairman’s choice award.

This year’s Carnival Queen, Emma Nicholson, and her princesses, Pheobe Stargatt and Amber Hayward, led the procession through town which started on time.

Bridgwater’s Gremlins Carnival Club hoped to win for a fifth consecutive year with its Xtinct cart, pictured right, however its hopes were dashed when it suffered technical problems and its cart was plunged into darkness five times along Burnham High Street.

There were large crowds of spectators all along the route and organisers said it had been a bumper event. “It was a brilliant evening and we were delighted to see such a big turnout,” Chairman Phil New told Burnham-On-Sea.com. “It all went smoothly.”
