Runners at Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge’s Park Run celebrated the event’s first anniversary on Saturday (June 18th) by taking part in colourful costumes.
The weekly runs at Apex Park have gradually grown in size over the past 12 months and now frequently attract over 200 runners.
Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Michael Clarke was the special guest at Saturday’s celebratory run, where he thanked the runners and volunteers who make it happen each week.
Organiser Reg Huxtable from Burnham Harriers told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are really pleased with how the event has grown – we started with 60 or so runners and the numbers have increased, although this does give a challenge with car parking!”
“We couldn’t have done it without our volunteers – we need 18-20 each week for the runs to happen, so without them it couldn’t work.”
Cllr Clarke told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s wonderful to see the event doing so well and also helping to improve the health of people in our community.”
The Mayor handed out a number of cetificates to the volunteers and some of the most frequent runners.
They included Tony Dickinson was given a certificate for completing the most weekly runs over the past year, while Sue Nicholls was awarded for having the best age grade percentage, the youngest runner award went to Killian Faubel, Len Horlock for the most male points, Mark Benton for the most photos, and Reg Huxtable for his work in organising the event.
The Burnham and Highbridge Park Run launched in June last year and the event is open to all runners each Saturday morning at 9am.
Park Runs are free to join, but runners need to sign up online here to get a unique barcode that enables them to log their finishing times each week.
