Over £23,000 was raised in Burnham-On-Sea for the Royal British Legion during the annual Poppy Appeal – and the group had further good news this week when it received a unique donation.
The legion, based in Burnham’s Victoria Street, was presented with a very special collection of poppy petals from the Armistice Ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 1937.
“A lady found them in her father’s house and has generously given them to us. It’s a wonderful gift – a small faded paper bag with writing on it and some poppy petals inside,” said the legion’s Gaynor Brown.
“The writing confirms that the petals came from the ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall on 11/11/1937.”
“We thought this was so special that they should be mounted and framed and then put in a place of honour at the Royal British Legion here in Burnham.”
It comes after the annual Poppy Appeal total beat last year’s, with almost £23,000 being collected in Burnham by the Legion’s supporters in supermarkets.
