Traffic grinds to a halt as Highbridge’s new Asda roundabout takes shape

-

Motorists faced long delays through Highbridge on Friday (August 17th) when the A38 was partially closed by ongoing work to build a new supermarket roundabout.

The busy route came to a standstill while one lane was closed as construction of the new roundabout, opposite the soon-to-launch Asda supermarket, continued.

“It was particularly bad on Friday morning,” one eyewitness told Burnham-On-Sea.com. “The traffic was backed up beyond Isleport on the north side and out to Huntspill on the south side.”

A road closure came into force along nearby Burnham Road on January 2nd for the roundabout work, which was expected to finish by the end of July. But delays mean it is now scheduled to be completed at the end of August.

Asda spokeswoman Helen Jones told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week that the roadworks are “on track” to finish at the end of August.

Direct access onto the A38 from Burnham Road is blocked by the work, but the spur road onto the A38 running past the War Memorial is open.
