Vintage Burnham-On-Sea poster goes on sale at top auction house

-

This vintage poster promoting Burnham-On-Sea as an ideal holiday destination is expected to sell for between £300 and £500 when it is auctioned in London next month.

The poster – emblazoned with the words ‘Come to Burnham for sea, sand and sun’ – features a tanned woman with perfect teeth and conservatively-dressed in a pink dress.

It was produced for British Railways around 1961. It reassures potential visitors that from the railway station at Highbridge there are “frequent bus services to Burnham, Berrow and Brean.”

The poster was printed by Waterlow & Sons of London and measures 40 x 25 inches. It will go on sale at Christies in South Kensington on September 13th.

In the early and middle parts of the 20th century when comparatively few people owned cars, enterprising railway companies commissioned artists to produce eye-catching posters to boost rail travel to resorts and beauty spots.
