A jet skier has told how he rescued a stricken speed boat in the sea off Burnham jetty on Thursday (April 28th).
John Murphy, pictured, managed to tow the drifting speedboat and its three occupants to safety after it broke down half a mile from Burnham jetty just before 5pm.
John told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I was skiing around the bay when my brother saw three people on the boat waving a flag to get attention.”
“He alerted me to them and I skied out to ask whether they needed help. They explained that their engine had run out of petrol and that they were drifting downstream with the tide.”
“I attached a rope to their boat and towed them to the shore.”
Burnham Coastguards and an RNLI lifeboat were also called to the scene, but Mr Murphy managed to complete the rescue himself.
An eagle-eyed Sedgemoor District Council lifeguard had spotted the occupants of the 18 foot speedboat upstream from the jetty and had phoned Swansea Coastguard control, who in turn, alerted Burnham Coastguards and RNLI.
Burnham’s Puffin lifeboat was taken to the town jetty, but on arrival at the beach the crew were stood down.
