A new world record for the biggest rugby scrum was set in Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday evening (April 30th).
A total of 191 players joined in the mass scrum at the town’s BASC ground, as pictured here, to smash the previous record of 68.
The record attempt was held to raise publicity and awareness for the organising charity, Somerset Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
It was watched by Burnham’s MP Tessa Munt, Burnham’s Mayor Michael Clarke and a crowd of onlookers.
Christine Piper from Somerset Breakthrough Breast Cancer told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are thrilled to have broken the record. We had an absolutely fantastic turnout and are so pleased to have broken the record.”
“While we are very confident that we have broken the previous record, we will have to wait for official confirmation from the team at the Guinness World Records.”
She added: “The previous official record was 68. Although a team from Leicester recently attempted to break it, we understand their 162 person scrum did not follow strict guidelines. In any case, we’ll have beaten them too!”
