MP attends Chamber of Trade business breakfast in Burnham-On-Sea

-

Local businesses owners got a chance to quiz Burnham-On-Sea’s MP while munching tea and toast during a business breakfast in the town on Friday (December 6th).

Burnham-On-Sea Chamber of Trade held the successful event in The Princess Theatre’s art lounge with MP Tessa Munt.

Among the topics discussed were calls for fairer business rates for small firms in the town centre.

Tessa Munt said: “We have to address the fact that shoppers increasingly buy on the Internet these days, so those traders who have a physical shop in the High Street should not be penalised with high business rates but actually encouraged to be there. I would like to see a re-evaluation of business rates.”

Other discussion points included the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement the day before, initiatives to boost trade in the town centre, and curbs on ‘commercial’ charity shops receiving business rate relief.

A Burnham Chamber of Trade spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This is one of many events held by the Chamber throughout the year to give local businesses a voice. It was a great opportunity to discuss local issues with our MP in an informal setting and we appreciate the support of all those who attended. We look forward to holding more events like this in the future.”

The event was free of charge to members of the Chamber of Trade.
