Conservatives in the Burnham-On-Sea area are celebrating after winning almost a dozen district council seats in Thursday’s local elections.
The Conservatives won eleven district council seats in Berrow, Brent Knoll, Burnham, Highbridge, Huntspill and Wedmore while the Lib Dems won two and independent candidates claimed two.
However, in the Burnham and Highbridge Town Council elections, the Conservatives saw Janet Keen losing her seat in Highbridge and Martin Lloyd losing his seat in Burnham East.
The Highbridge ward has been won by Lib Dem and Independent candidates while Burnham East is also represented by two Lib Dems.
However, long-running Conservative councillors including Peter Burridge-Clayton, Neville Jones, Bob Filmer, Dennis Davey, Pauline Pollard and Ken Smout retained their seats.
Former Burnham Mayor Louise Parkin also returns to the Town Council after a four-year absence, having won a seat in Burnham North.
Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I would like to thank everybody that voted. It is important that our residents’ views are known and this was a good opportunity.”
“I would also like to thank all the candidates for putting their names forward. Council work is sometimes a thankless task and their willingness is appreciated. On a personal note I am delighted with the result, to come top of the poll for 16 years is very pleasing.”
