Seven police cars were called to the junction of Church Street and Market Street just after 4.30pm when officers created a road block to prevent the stolen van being driven away from the scene, as pictured here.
The drama began when the white-coloured stolen Citroen C15 van was spotted being driven through Highbridge by an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera.
Inspector Roger Tolley told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The camera team alerted us that the vehicle had been seen, having been stolen from Trull, near Taunton, on April 26th.”
“Officers quickly made their way to the scene in Market Street and the driver entered the van and started to drive away.”
“The van crashed into one of our police cars but fortunately there were no injuries.”
Police arrested a 53 year-old who is from Mark, and have since charged him with failing to stop and driving while disqualified.
He appeared before magistrates on Monday and has been remanded in custody until May 18th.
An eyewitness told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It was a very dramatic few minutes – the stolen van was reversed along Market Street at high speed towards the roundabout where it was cornered by several police. It slammed into one police car and the driver was soon arrested by a large number of officers.”
