New one-hour parking restriction comes into force in Burnham-On-Sea

-

A new one hour parking time limit is being introduced in Burnham-On-Sea town centre in an effort to make the town more ‘shopper friendly’.

The new one-hour maximum parking restriction is being introduced this week across the town centre, excluding The Esplanade and car parks, by Somerset County Council in a bid to standardise street parking regulations.

It comes after residents complained about the confusing mix of 15-minute, 30-minute and 1-hour parking restrictions in force in different areas of the town.

The exceptions to the one hour will be for disabled motorists and areas such as Victoria Street, where post office visitors will continue to see shorter time limits to maximise the number of parking spaces available.

Cllr Michael Clarke, who led the Town Council committee that proposed the new regulations, told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “There are many different parking restrictions in force at the moment across the town centre that make it confusing for motorists.”

“We hope that introducing an hour’s limit across much of the town will make it simpler for visitors and increase the amount of parking spaces available during the daytime.”

The number of disabled spaces along the High Street is also set to be reduced with spaces moving into the side streets instead to free up more spaces.

Cllr Clarke added: “It’s the first step of a number of improvements for the town centre over the coming year and a half.”
