Severn Barrage boss to visit Burnham as project gains momentum

-

The entrepreneur behind ambitious plans to build a multi-billion pound Severn Barrage across the Bristol Channel from Brean, near Burnham-On-Sea, to Wales will be in town later this month to discuss his proposals with the general public.

Gareth Woodham (pictured), who is leading the ambitious ‘Severn Lake’ project, will address a public meeting of Burnham-On-Sea Chamber of Trade on January 17th in the Town Council offices in Jaycroft Road at 6.30pm.

Local opponents to the scheme will also address the meeting, led by Patrick Stokes, Chairman of The Burnham And Somerset Levels Sea Flood Study Group, who recently said he would prefer the barrage to be built between Minehead and Wales.

Meanwhile, Mr Woodham has just submitted a Pre-Scoping Document to BERR, the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, outlining his plans for the huge scheme.

The document sets out the Severn Lake Company’s intentions to submit a planning application and how the project will be taken forward.

He says the document represents “the first pebble being thrown into the water in the planning process” and added that by the end of February 2008, he hopes a financial prospectus will be available in which financial backers of the huge scheme will be invited.

“These are exciting times for the project – and I look forward to coming to Burnham to discuss them with the general public,” Mr Woodham told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
