20 mile pilgrimage walk raises awareness of Christian Aid Week

-

Churchgoers from across the Burnham-On-Sea area took part in a unique 20 mile walk on Saturday (May 14th) to raise awareness of this week’s Christian Aid Week.

Reverend Geoffrey Walsh and parishioners from East and West Huntspill joined the special walk from the Bishop’s Palace in Wells to Huntspill, as pictured here.

Rev Walsh told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Many families in the Third World have neither running fresh water in their homes nor in their village, but have to walk miles to collect their daily water from local rivers. We walked with them today.”

“The water was collected from St Andrew’s Well in the Bishop’s Palace Gardens and we were sent on our way rejoicing with a prayer and blessing from Peter Maurice, the Bishop of Taunton.”

“Other parishes with us represented the parish of St Andrews in Burnham and the parish of St Mary’s in Wedmore. The water we carried from Wells will be used in baptisms in our parish churches.”

He said the event had been called ‘Walking with water from water to water’ as those taking part were carrying a gallon of water, the containers being donated by Riches Cider Farm in Watchfield, from the waters of Wells to the sea water of the Bristol Channel.

Rev Walsh added: “We walked today to be at one with those living in poverty. You also can be part of this worthwhile charitable work. If you have an official Christian Aid collector at your door this week please do give generously or give to one of their street collectors.”
