Seafront walkers have been urged to take extra care during this weekend’s high tides as plumes of spray splashed onto Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront last night (Friday) during the stormy weather.
Waves crashed onto the sea wall at the peak of the tide at 8.22pm, as pictured here, leaving pools of sea water on several areas of The Esplanade, but the town again escaped flooding.
Residents have been warned not to put their safety at risk while watching the high tides this weekend.
“Keep away and look from a distance. We’ve had wave watchers getting too close and it can be very dangerous,” said the Environment Agency’s Alan Burrows.
The agency shut the town’s flood gates at the top of the jetty, the Sailing Club and also at Maddock’s Slade last night as a precaution against flooding.
On Saturday there will be an 11.8m tide at 8.42am and an 11.5m tide at 9.08pm, with a risk of flooding on Sunday when further stormy weather is forecast at the same time as the evening high tide at 9.52pm.
