Council cuts rule out appointment of Burnham-On-Sea town crier

-

A meeting of councillors on Monday approved a recommendation from the council’s own Policy Finance Committee not to appoint one.

“Having given consideration to the need for a crier, their duties, expenses, regalia, payment and recruitment, members felt this was not an appropriate time to consider the recruitment of a Town Crier,” a spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

The council decided that the decision will be reviewed each year.

Burnham and Highbridge’s last crier, Fred Smith, died in 2009 after 24 years in the role. He became crier in 1985 after the town council revived the position following a period of around 50 years with no-one in the role.
