A £39m project to improve Burnham-On-Sea’s sea water quality will take a big step forward this week with the start of major sewer works in the district.
Wessex Water is temporarily closing a busy road through Bridgwater, The Clink, to allow new sewer pipes to be installed as part of the work to improve Burnham’s sea water quality.
“The Clink will be closed from Monday 22nd August to Sunday 11th September while the new pipework is installed. This work is part of our £39m project to improve bathing water quality in the Burnham-On-Sea area,” explained spokeswoman Lauren East.
The work comes after new EU regulations came into force in May that left Burnham-On-Sea with a “poor” sea water classification.
It resulted in Burnham-On-Sea’s Stert Island swim being cancelled, ending a 15-year tradition.
And Burnham-On-Sea missed out on a Seaside Award because of the new EU bathing water classification.
Wessex Water is carrying out major sewer works to help address some of the issues. The spokeswoman added: “A diversion will be in place while a section of The Clink is closed from the junction with East Quay to the junction with Northgate. We would advise motorists who normally use the route to allow extra time for their journey.”
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the essential work that will help to protect the local environment.”
